In 2014 an object crashed into the ocean near Papau New Guinea and scientists now believe that the meteorite may have originated outside our solar system.
Data collected at the time of the crash indicates that the speed of the object at the time of the crash would indicate that it had a deep space origin.
If it’s true, the object is only the 3rd known object of its kind. Previously Oumuamua and Borisov were tracked as they traveled through our solar system. This third object would be the first of its kind to land on Earth and scientists want to retrieve the meteorite from the ocean to study it.
If they are able, it would be the first time anyone ever studied an interstellar object within our atmosphere.
