Space Stations and Runaway Boosters

Newly appointed head of Roscosmos Yuri Borisov says that after meeting with Vladimir Putin, Russia will leave the Iinternational Space Station after 2024. They do plan to continue to have cosmonauts abord the ISS until their own orbital outpost is operational. The Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS) isn’t expected to be completed before 2028.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson says NASA is committed to the ISS through 2030.

China’s Tiangong space station has doubled in size after adding a new laboratory module called Wentian. The launch to get Wentian into orbit was not a smooth one, however as the 25 ton Long March-5B Y3 rocket booster has gone out of control and is expected to fall back to Earth by July 31. While everyone hopes for a water landing, it is possible that 20-40% of the booster could land in a populated area.

SpaceX has its own rocket booster complications after a Falcon 9 booster collided with a bridge during the trip from Hawthorne, CA to the company’s test facility in McGregor, TX. The booster was horizontal on the back of a truck that was transporting it and didn’t make it below the bridge’s clearance. The interstage portion of the booster was damaged and has delayed the launch of the Crew-5.
